Softscape
Softscape refers to the living, horticultural elements of a landscape, including lawns, trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and groundcovers. It is the complement to hardscape, providing color, texture, seasonal change, and habitat. Successful softscape design matches each plant to its site conditions of sun, soil, and moisture so the planting establishes and thrives.
Why it matters on Nantucket
Nantucket softscape has to contend with salt-laden wind, fast-draining sandy soil, and heavy deer pressure, so plant selection is everything. Choosing salt- and deer-tolerant species is what separates a planting that flourishes from one that struggles on the island.
In practice
Softscape is where a Nantucket property is won or lost, because plant choice here is doing three jobs at once: surviving salt-laden wind, coping with sandy soil that holds very little water or nutrient, and standing up to browsing pressure from one of the densest deer herds in Massachusetts. A planting plan that ignores any one of the three tends to look fine in its first June and thin by its third.
The practical approach is to zone the property honestly. The exposed windward edge gets the toughest, most salt-tolerant material and asks the least of it. Pockets sheltered by a hedge, a wall, or the house itself can carry the ornamental planting that would fail in the open, which is one reason hardscape and planting are best designed together rather than in sequence. Improving sandy soil with organic matter at planting, and mulching to hold what moisture there is, does more for long-term establishment than any amount of feeding later.
What to watch for
- Plants sold as full sun performing badly in an exposed position; wind, not light, is usually the limit
- New beds installed without soil improvement, which look established for one season and then stall
- A plan with no wind shelter built into it at all
- Anything described as deer-proof; no plant is, and preference shifts with what else is available
