How the six fit together

Six services cover what an island property actually needs across a year, and in practice most of them lean on each other. Grading and drainage decide what the ground does with water before anything is built on it. Hardscaping creates the level, sheltered ground that makes planting viable. Planting and lawn care fill it in. Hedge and tree work keeps the wind off all of it. Spring and fall cleanups are what carry the whole thing from one season to the next.

What ties them together is that Nantucket is a harder place to landscape than it looks. The soil is sandy glacial outwash that drains fast and holds little. The wind carries salt well inland. The island sits in USDA zone 7b, so winter cold is rarely the limiting factor, but exposure very much is. Deer pressure runs several times the Massachusetts average. And two sets of island rules apply to the work itself: the Historic District Commission reviews exterior features across the whole island, and the Board of Health licenses anyone applying fertilizer commercially.

You do not have to take all six. Plenty of properties want maintenance only, or a single hardscape project, or a planting plan to work through over a few seasons. Whichever it is, the estimate starts the same way, by walking the property and looking at exposure, drainage, and what is already working.
