In practice
Sod buys instant coverage, and on sandy island soil that early erosion control is worth real money on a newly disturbed site. It does not buy a shortcut through soil preparation. The ground still has to be cleared, graded, amended, and firmed, because the sod's thin soil layer holds only a few days of water and the roots have to reach down into whatever is underneath. Laid on unprepared sand, sod greens up beautifully and then sits as a mat that never really knits in.
The first three weeks decide the outcome. Sod needs to be kept consistently moist while the roots bridge into the soil below, tapering to deeper and less frequent watering once it has knitted, which is what drives roots down rather than keeping them at the surface. Stay off it while it establishes, and hold off the first mow until it resists a gentle tug. Seed remains the better choice where budget matters more than immediacy and the season allows, but on exposed ground that will wash before seed germinates, sod earns its cost.
